DESINST 380 / DESIGN 301 Introduction to Design Impact to be taken in first quarter of graduate study.
2-qtr Applied design project course is to be taken in Winter and Spring quarters during the first year of graduate study. Options are: ME206A/B Design for Extreme Affordability, BIOE374A/B Biodesign Innovation, ENERGY277A/B Engineering and Sustainable Development or other pre-approved two-quarter project-based design course.
3-qtr Capstone series to be taken in second year of graduate study.
To be taken year 1 of graduate study.
One or more of the course options will contribute towards this requirement depending on a student’s domain area of interest.
3-4 Units required.
Students, throughout their time in the program will work on design projects in a team-based setting. The leadership requirement classes all challenge students to level-up from team member to team leader.

Depending on a students’ prior knowledge and desired trajectory the visualization course they select may differ, however everyone is guaranteed a slot in DESINST 215.

Methods range from classes on materials and mechanisms to understand what is possible with physical design, to manufacturing processes and supply chain logistics to understand how physical design is implemented.
ME203 Design and Manufacturing must be taken in Q1 of graduate study.
Methods range from foundational classes on programing methodologies and human computer interaction to applied courses on user experience design, AI, data science, synthetic biology, blockchain, and other emerging technologies.
CS106A, CS106B or higher level CS class (by permission of advisors) must be taken in Q1 of graduate study.
Methods range from quantitative and qualitative research techniques to modify and evolve design opportunity and problem spaces paired with an advanced knowledge of human behavior.
STATS110, PSYCH238, PSYCH215, or COMM206 must be taken in Q1 of graduate study.
Design can only achieve meaningful impact when it is expressed in the world. Each of the three methods focus areas captured below enables students to effectively implement their design abilities. They allow students to have methods for analysis, describing phenomena, and design problem application. These focus areas are central to a student's professional marketability. Students select one of the following methods focus areas.
Students will select a domain focus area to gain added knowledge in a field of interest to them. Students will work with their advisor to define a rigorous domain focus area and select the appropriate courses. This domain depth provides a rich context for the MS capstone project.
