Ph.D. Minor in Biomedical Informatics

For a Ph.D. minor in Biomedical Informatics (BMI), a Ph.D. candidate must complete a minimum of 20 units of coursework. The requirements are:

  1. Complete 12 units chosen from the BMI core courses listed above:

  2. Complete 8 units from any combination of:

    1. any course at the 200-level or above on the BMI Computer Science/Statistics/Math/Engineering electives list: Electives | Biomedical Informatics | Stanford Medicine

    2. any BMI core course (above)

    3. BIOMEDIN 201 Biomedical Informatics Student Seminar (1 unit)

  3. A students in the BMI Ph.D. minor is expected to participate regularly in BIOMEDIN 201 Biomedical Informatics Student Seminar. Units from enrollment in BIOMEDIN 201 can be used once (maximum of one quarter) towards the BMI Ph.D. minor.

  4. All courses used for the BMI Ph.D. minor must be taken for a letter grade, except for BIOMEDIN 201. The student should maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

  5. Units taken for the minor can be counted as part of the overall requirement for the Ph.D. of 135 units of graduate coursework done at Stanford. Courses used for a minor may not be used also to meet the requirements for a master's degree.

  6. Courses taken before applying to the BMI Ph.D. minor can be counted towards the minor requirements.

Stanford Ph.D. students should submit:

  1. Unofficial Stanford transcript

3. Statement of purpose for adding the Ph.D. minor degree

Submit the form and accompanying materials to the Biomedical Informatics program.

Advising

A minor program advisor is assigned upon admission to the program.
