ARTS-MIN - Interdisciplinary Arts (Minor)
Overview
Program Overview
The Interdisciplinary Arts Minor (“Inter-Arts Minor”) allows students in any major to deepen their understanding of the arts, to familiarize themselves with the theory and techniques of arts, and to make meaningful connections across departments on campus. This minor equips students with a diverse set of tools to become more sophisticated scholars and makers of arts.
To earn a Minor in Interdisciplinary Arts, students must complete at least 27 units of coursework in the program and a senior capstone. Required coursework includes a foundational course in interdisciplinary methods, an experiential arts course, and 13-14 units of electives that will contribute to and facilitate their arts projects. The minor culminates in an interdisciplinary senior capstone that combines the student’s critical and creative interests. The capstone takes place over the course of senior year and is supported by an accompanying series of workshops.
Students must declare the minor in Axess no later than the last day of Autumn Quarter of their senior year, although they are advised to declare sooner. Students are invited to discuss the minor with the Honors in the Arts Fellow and prepare a Plan of Study that includes the focus of minor study and a list of elective courses planned to fulfill the requirements. Students must also complete a Capstone Proposal in Spring Quarter of their junior year. Both the Study Plan and Capstone Proposal must receive approval by the Faculty Director. Students interested in pursuing a Minor in Interdisciplinary Arts should contact the Honors in the Arts Fellow Jessi Piggott (jpiggott@stanford.edu) for more information and to begin the planning process.

Students are encouraged to reflect on the coherence of their coursework. A successful plan of study will focus on one or two disciplinary intersections, so that the student is well-prepared to complete an interdisciplinary creative capstone in their senior year.
Students may not count courses for both a major and a minor. Courses used to satisfy all units taken for the minor must be taken for a letter grade. A maximum of six units from the workshop series (ARTSINST 200A,B&C) may count towards the minor.
