The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine offers comprehensive education in perioperative patient care, pain management, and critical care medicine. At Stanford Medicine, our mission is to care, educate and discover, and our vision is to heal humanity through science and compassion, one patient at a time.

Education programs in the Department aim to provide the environment and resources to help learners fulfill their highest professional potential. The Department has approximately 300 faculty, 100 anesthesiology residents, 50 ACGME subspecialty fellows, 40 postdoctoral fellows, and hundreds of undergraduate and medical students that rotate through a variety of pre-clerkship and clerkship experiences at Stanford Hospital and clinics, the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. World-class programs exist in cardiac anesthesia, critical care medicine, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, multispecialty anesthesia, global health, and pain medicine.

Students learn and work with faculty clinicians who provide highly skilled, compassionate, patient-centered care. Researchers in the Department lead high-impact basic, translational, clinical, and population health programs and consistently rank among the top few anesthesiology departments in the country for funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The Department’s mission includes recruiting, supporting, retaining, and promoting diversity. Each division has faculty dedicated to creating scholarship opportunities, fostering inclusion, providing mentorship, and guiding education efforts to address the health needs of a diverse patient population.
