Download as PDF

Course Description

Tutorial taught by grad student. Limited to 10 students. Frantz Fanon was an Afro-Caribbean psychiatrist and decolonial philosopher from the French colony of Martinique who dedicated the latter part of his life to writing and fighting against French colonialism in the middle of the 20th Century. In this course, we will read two key texts in his oeuvre: The Wretched of the Earth and A Dying Colonialism. Together, we will analyze these texts with an eye toward reconstructing and understanding Fanon's theory of colonialism and considering its contemporary relevance. Along the way, we will track how Fanon creatively redeploys inherited categories from traditional figures in European Philosophy toward critically examining and disclosing the nature of racial and colonial domination. No background in Fanon or philosophy needed to be successful in the course. All are welcomed.
