Surveillance States and Societies

The course analyzes the evolution, functions, structures and consequences of surveillance in the modern era. Among issues discussed are the rise of the modern state and population politics, information gathering and its uses in domestic and national security arenas, institutions of surveillance in various regimes and polities, and the challenge of privacy, legal and ethical dilemmas.
