The Department of Emergency Medicine is transforming healthcare by leading advances in emergency medicine through innovation, the pursuit of equity, and leadership in scientific discovery. Emergency medicine is the medical specialty dedicated to the care of acutely ill or injured adults and children. The Department offers numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, both clinical and non-clinical.

Patient Care: The Stanford Emergency Department has served the Bay Area for over 60 years. It is the only Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center between San Francisco and San Jose. With a faculty of over 100 board-certified emergency physicians and an annual census of over 100,000 patients, we are one of the largest emergency departments in the nation. Stanford Emergency Medicine is dedicated to excellence in the precise delivery of rapid interventions, as reflected in its status as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center. The Department’s Precision Emergency Medicine mission is to leverage big data and advanced technologies to provide each patient with the right care at the right time to achieve optimal health outcomes.

Research and Collaboration: The Department is a nationally-recognized center of clinical and research excellence, with research efforts covering a wide range of multidisciplinary programs including basic sciences research, preclinical studies, and clinical trials. Research areas of focus include applied clinical informatics, epidemiology, health disparities, medical education, global health, social emergency medicine, emergency medical services, stroke care, innovation, and ultrasound. There is a dedicated Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Unit, with clinical trials coordinators to support prospective study enrollment at the bedside.

Teaching and Scholarly Missions: For decades, Stanford has been a recognized leader in emergency medicine education for learners across the continuum of training and practice. Students from a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs enroll in emergency medicine courses. The academic and robust clinical environment supports a required emergency medicine clerkship for both medical students and physician assistant students, clinical electives, a strong four-year emergency medicine residency program, and 11 post-graduate fellowship programs. Continuing medical education is sponsored through didactic programs, faculty skills labs, and sponsored medical conferences.

Administrative Offices: The Department of Emergency Medicine is located at 900 Welch Road, Suite 350, Palo Alto, CA, 94304.
